Epitalon — The Longevity Peptide Being Explored for Health Span, Sleep & Fertility

Peptides have become increasingly popular in longevity and health optimisation circles, promising anything from better skin and hair, to reduce joint pains and faster healing from injuries, to weight loss, a more defined and toned body, all the way to living longer.

But are they what they promise, and more importantly, are they safe? 

Let’s explore another peptide in today’s post, and what research really says: Epitalon

While you have likely come across the likes of Ozempic or mounjaro, BPC-157 or copper peptides by now, Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon or Epithalone) is one that tends to fly under the radar.

Today’s post is dedicated to Epitalon, and it intriguing potential benefits to health and longevity.

It was originally discovered in the 1980s and experimented with by Russian researchers. Aim was to address the physiological stress, circadian disruption, and accelerated aging experienced by cosmonauts and military personnel.

Epitalon has been shown to:

  • Support circadian rhythm, sleep and melatonin production (R)
  • Lengthen our telomeres, with resulting longevity benefits (more on that later) (R)
  • Support and extend egg quality and fertility
  • Support eye health (R)
 
 

Telomeres, and their impact on health and longevity

You may or may not have heard of telomeres. They are little caps at the end of our genes (much like the plastic caps on the end of shoe laces), preventing them from fraying. As we get older they tend to shorten, eventually causing damage and fraying of the genes, contributing to aging, decline and disease.

Research suggests that ‘telomere attrition’, the degradation of the protective caps, to be one of the 12 hallmarks of aging, underlying most of the age related health issues we try to prevent when we speak about longevity. Ie cardiovascular disease such as strokes and heart attacks, neurodegeneration such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes, and the list goes on.

Telomerase is an enzyme that helps to maintain these caps. In normal human cells, its activity declines as we get older, contributing to the caps fraying. Surprisingly, cancer cells upregulate this enzyme, making them practically immortal.

Epitalon has been shown to upregulate telomerase activity, thereby slowing the degradation of the caps (telomeres) and improving health span (R, R, R).

This assist in the other health benefits observed with epitalon, such as the reduction in the gradual declining function of eyes, egg quality and fertility (R), supports delayed wound healing caused by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) (R).

Research further suggests that epitalon, by its effect on the pineal gland, might help balance irregular cycles and prolactin levels, and protect from the damaging effects of xenobiotics on the reproductive system (R), all of which may prove beneficial for women struggling with hormones, fertility and cycle regularity, such as seen in amenorrhea and PMOS (formerly known as PCOS).

Epitalon has also demonstrated immunomodulatory effects (R), and to reduce free radical damage via upregulation of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, thereby extending lifespan by 12 – 24% in animal longevity studies (R).

Epitalon and cancer risk

With epitalon increasing telomerase activity, that enzyme that protects the caps of our genes, and prevents them from dying, which is usually a sign of cancer biology, it begs the obvious question, whether epitalon could possibly pose a cancer risk.

Theoretically, this creates a plausible concern.

However, fascinatingly thus far research shows the opposite.

Despite this theoretical correlation, current animal and preclinical studies have not demonstrated an association with increased cancer development (R), and may in fact even suppress cancer growth, and reduce metastasis (R, R).

Research suggests its effects in extending health span, geroprotector activity, and safety of its long-term administration in mice (R).

But remember, epitalon is not (yet) registered for human use, with this theoretical risk being one of the potential yellow flags to keep in mind, if one was to experiment.
