What Really Matters for Health & Longevity Optimisation

Ditching the fads

You want to feel, function and perform at your best — not just now, but for decades to come.

You are interested in health and longevity, but increasingly overwhelmed by the noise:

  • Cold plunges
  • Peptides
  • Supplements
  • Biohacking trends
  • Conflicting advice online

What actually matters?
What is evidence-based, what is personalised, and what is simply marketing?

Perhaps your annual check-ups come back as ‘normal’, yet subtle issues are starting to appear:

  • Blood pressure or cholesterol slowly creeping up
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Energy dips after meals
  • Poor sleep
  • Reliance on antihistamines every spring
  • Acid reflux medication
  • Stubborn weight gain
  • Aching joints
  • Declining resilience and recovery

These symptoms are often dismissed as:

‘just part of getting older’.

But common does not necessarily mean optimal.

Many of these seemingly small issues are early signals that the body is under strain long before disease develops.

True health and longevity optimisation is not about extreme restriction or chasing the latest fad. It is about understanding your unique biology — and choosing precise, personalised and science backed interventions that improve how you feel now and protect how you function for decades to come.

It is about connecting the dots across the bigger health picture, identifying the root causes of dysfunction and cellular decline, and taking a truly comprehensive approach — rather than relying on yet another supplement or medication to suppress a single symptom.

All while still fully enjoying life.
After all, longevity without quality of life is hardly longevity at all.

So what does science actually say about optimal health and longevity?

While most think of different health problems as separate issues with distinct reasons, research in fact paints a different picture. Think Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease such as strokes and heart attacks. Research over the past decade has in fact shown that most chronic health issues have at their core the same underlying factors, also called the 12 hallmarks of aging. These include factors like chronic inflammation, faulty cellular communication such as via hormones and neurotransmitters, fraying of the genes (called telomere attrition) leading to wrong signalling, problems with cellular energy production (ie mitochondrial issues), cells that should have died staying around and causing havoc (also called senescence, or ‘zombie cells’) and a few more. Rather than it being one pathway leading to one health problem, research suggests it is in fact an interconnectedness between these factors that ultimately leads to breakdown of our health after a long time of accumulating small issues. You can think of this as a cogwheel machinery, which if small issues build up, like sludge or rust, they have a knock-on effect on the entire machinery, not just one cogwheel, and eventually, if enough of this sludge or rust builds up, the entire machinery grinds to a halt.

Mainstream longevity medicine often focuses on supporting individual pathways through targeted supplements, medications or interventions. Think anti-inflammatory drugs, NAD+ injections or metformin. And while all of those have a role to play and can be wonderful helpers when taken appropriately, a lot of these can have side effects. Functional Medicine and the way I practise takes this one step further: It asks the question ‘Why’. Why are these pathways blocked in the first place? Why is there rust and sludge? And then works on addressing those root underlying triggers, to not only support one hallmark or pathway, but clears out the rust that caused the issues to begin with! Think of it like an oil change for your car.

In practice, this approach tends to attract two broad groups of people. Those with already existing symptoms or full blown conditions that are looking to get to the root of their issues, and those that feel generally fine, but would like to be proactive and prevent running into issues down the line. As when it comes down to it, the root causes, that sludge and rust, connects them all.

A large part plays a 360 approach that connects all the dots, diving deep into the history of that person, and then deciding on appropriate testing to get to the root of cellular decline, and then create a personalised and targeted health strategy that fits the person’s unique biology, but also their lifestyle and preferences.

Some examples of commonly used testing include:

  • Gut microbiome testing
  • Hidden infections such as fungal, mould, viral that can contribute to chronic inflammation
  • Hidden food intolerances
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Environmental pollutants such as heavy metal and plastic body burden
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Predictive biomarker
  • And more

Some of these tests are ‘regular’ blood tests the person already has from their annual check ups, but we place them into stricter ‘optimal’ ranges. Research suggests that for a lot of lab markers, ‘optimal’ ranges exist, with results that are in the ‘normal’, yet outside the ‘optimal’ range, already contributing to that gradual ‘sludge’ building up. These are simple yet powerful adjustments to one’s health trajectory, that can have wide reaching preventative and health promoting effects.

An example is vitamin D, where most labs state anything between 30 – 300 nmol/l being ‘normal’, yet its immune supporting, cancer and autoimmune disease preventative actions only really shine once the levels go beyond 100!

Another common example is ferritin, our iron storage molecule. Common reference ranges of most labs can be anywhere from around 15 – 400. Iron is needed to create red blood cells and send oxygen to our cells, ie its main energy source! Research suggests that for optimal oxygen supply, we want ferritin to be between 60-100! Below that, our cells are literally starving, with wide reaching effects on energy levels, thyroid function, metabolism and weight management, and more! On the flipside, anytime it goes above 100, it appears to start ‘rusting’ our cells, contributing to Alzheimer’s, cancers and cardiovascular disease. And this is what I call a ‘low hanging fruit’ – ie very easily fixable. If ferritin is below optimal you want to increase iron intake and absorption, if iron storage is indeed on the higher end, you’d want to donate blood and get rid of some of those stores!

I generally also look at someone’s DNA, so we can get a blueprint of where that person’s ‘weak spots’ might lie, and how to personalise the strategy even further, truly empowering the person to take their health into their own hands. BUT: DNA health testing is only one piece of the puzzle, and must be combined with real time health monitoring and testing. With DNA health testing having become trendy, it often gets used on its own, and lifelong supplements and strategies prescribed according to just what the DNA says. However, research over the past decades has decoded that our environment, and what is around the genes (called ‘epigenetic’) is just as, and most likely much more important than the actual code we get at birth. So often times someone might be expressing a ‘bad gene’, their lifestyle choices might intuitively be turning that off, or supporting it, and blindly supplementing might actually cause detrimental side effects.

However it does give us some valuable insight into why certain people might struggle more with certain areas than others, and can be very empowering once they know a their weak spots, but also b how to support them with precision.

And remember, there is always a ‘why’.

In my practise, we look at all the different angles and build a truly personalised root cause strategy that suits the person’s lifestyle, goals and preferences, alongside their biology.

This generally happens over the course of the initial 6 months, where we gradually look at everything from a 360 angle, leaving the individual with an empowering strategy to look and feel better in the moment, but also in the long run.

If this resonates, the first step is simply a conversation — no pressure, no clinical deep dive. Just an honest discussion about your health, your goals, and whether this approach is the right fit for you.
